The shortcut version of Brazilian coffee is a single product from a single place: large, mechanised, commodity. That version leaves out the part that matters to anyone choosing a bag, which is that Brazil grows two commercial coffee species on separate regional footprints with separate harvest windows, and that the country invented one of the first coffee geographical indications in the Americas to draw a line between them.
Reading a Brazilian bag properly means answering four questions in order — which species, which region, which certification, which process. The figures below come from Brazil's own supply agency and from national and international agricultural statistics, with the harvest year attached to every crop number.
Two species, one country, two calendars
Brazil produces both arabica and conilon, the local robusta variety, and the split in the 2024 harvest ran at roughly seven parts arabica to three parts conilon by volume. That is a large robusta crop by world standards: Brazil is the leading producer of both species at once, which is why world supply cannot be read off a single Brazilian number.
The two species are grown in different places and picked at different times. Arabica dominates the higher, cooler elevations of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Bahia and is harvested mainly from May to September. Conilon and the Amazonian robustas are concentrated in Espírito Santo, Rondônia and southern Bahia and come in from around April, with Espírito Santo alone carrying the majority of the national conilon area.
The regions behind the regional names
Sul de Minas is the largest arabica block in the country and the reason so many Brazilian bags name Minas Gerais. Around it sit the other named areas: the Cerrado Mineiro in the Triângulo and Alto Paranaíba, Alta Mogiana on the São Paulo side of the Minas border, and the Matas de Minas and Mantiqueira de Minas zones in the higher and more rugged parts of the state.
Bahia adds the Cerrado da Bahia and the Planalto da Bahia on the western plateau, famous for high-altitude arabica, while Rondônia produces what the state markets as Robusta Amazônico from its own clone selections. Altitude and uniformity of ripening are what divide these areas: the flat Cerrado is machine-harvestable and vast, and the mountain zones are picked by hand.
Geographical indications as a reading key
Brazil uses geographical indications in much the same way Europe does, and the coffee register starts with a Minas region. Cerrado Mineiro was the first Brazilian coffee region to obtain an indication of provenance from the national industrial property office, in 2005, and was later upgraded to a denomination of origin, in 2013 — the stricter of the two categories, tied to the region's soil and climate rather than only to its boundary.
Alta Mogiana and Mantiqueira de Minas followed with their own registrations, and the practical value of the mark is that it is a boundary, not an adjective. A bag carrying a registered name can be traced to a defined territory under an inspection regime; an unregistered regional word on a bag is a description.
The crop calendar and the weather record
Brazil's harvest and its weather history are inseparable, because a single frost can move the world price. The total coffee area reported for the 2024 harvest is around 2.2 million hectares, of which roughly 1.8 million is arabica and about 0.4 million conilon, and the arabica crop is the one exposed to the southern cold. The July 1994 frost is the reference point for that exposure, and the supply agency's historical production series is where its effect on the following seasons' estimates is recorded.
The 20 July 2021 frost was the modern rerun, arriving after a drought year in 2020 and 2021 and hitting the Cerrado and southern Minas. Together with the drought, it pushed the supply agency's next arabica estimate down and reset the market's expectations for two seasons. Both events are visible in the historical production series published by the national supply agency, rather than only in trade commentary.
Production, area and exports with their years
Brazil's supply agency, CONAB, publishes the harvest surveys that the trade treats as the reference series, and they are built from field counts rather than from export tallies. The 2024 harvest was estimated at about 55 million 60 kg bags, with arabica a little over two-thirds of the total and conilon making up the rest, grown on the area split given above.
Exports run at a similar order of magnitude: Brazil shipped more than 50 million bags in 2024, a record for the country, according to the exporters' council that tracks monthly shipments. The practical consequence for a buyer is that the harvest year matters more in Brazil than almost anywhere else, because two crops a year reach the market from opposite hemispheres and Brazilian lots dominate the global blend.
Reading a Brazilian label
Sort the words on the bag into the four layers. Species first: arabica or conilon, and the regional names that imply each. Region second: a state, a registered indication, or a farm and lot. Certification third: an origin mark, an organic or a sustainability certificate, each issued by a named body. Process last: Brazil runs natural, pulped natural and washed in volume, and the pulped natural category — fruit removed mechanically with mucilage left to dry — is a Brazilian specialty that sits between a washed and a natural.
A bag that names all four layers has been produced by someone who expects to be checked. A bag that offers only the country name has told you the species at best, and the remaining three questions are worth putting to the roaster.

Every crop figure above is stated with the harvest season it belongs to and the agency that published it, and the area split is quoted at the level the national survey reports it. The two weather events are dated, and the geographical indication dates come from the national register rather than from trade descriptions.
