When text cleanup helps—and when it hurts
Where clutter comes from
Text copied from a PDF, slide deck, email, or web page can carry repeated spaces, uneven blank lines, and typographic quotation marks. Those artifacts may be harmless visually but awkward in a form, code block, or content system.
What a simple cleaner can safely do
Trimming line edges, reducing repeated spaces, and limiting blank lines are usually easy to inspect. A small, visible change is preferable to a hidden rewrite.
What to check afterward
Look for names, abbreviations, quoted language, code, poetry, tables represented as text, and intentional line breaks. A cleaner cannot know which spaces carry meaning.
Keep an original
Before changing a passage, keep the source in another document or use a copy. Local processing does not remove the need for ordinary version control.
